Square Montholon is a historic urban park located in the ninth arrondissement of Paris, near Rue Mayran and Rue de Montholon. Developed in eighteen sixty-three under the direction of Adolphe Alphand, it is one of twenty-four green spaces created during the Second Empire. Visitors will notice the elegant terraced design, complete with century-old oriental plane trees, including one planted in eighteen seventy-two that rises to about thirty-two meters.

During its construction, workers uncovered a complete mammoth skeleton. This remarkable find added an extra layer to the square’s heritage by connecting the ancient past to the vibrant present. The park is bordered by ornate wrought iron fences designed by Gabriel Davioud with grilles by Christophe-François Calla, design elements also seen in other famous Parisian sites.

Art lovers may recall that the park once hosted notable sculptures such as Gloria Victis and La Sainte Catherine—a tribute to local female laborers. A memorial stele in the square honors young Jewish children lost during deportation in World War Two. Over time, Square Montholon has also found its way into literature and music, linking its storied past with modern cultural expressions. Today, modern amenities join its historic charm, welcoming visitors to explore a peaceful retreat enriched with history and art.
