Audio GuideBasilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre
Iconic, domed white church, completed in 1914, with interior mosaics, stained-glass windows & crypt.
Perched high atop Montmartre, at the heart of Paris’s artistic quarter, stands the dazzling white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. From here, sweeping city views stretch to the horizon, while vibrant street life flows at its feet. Completed just over one hundred years ago, this legendary church blends spiritual devotion, bold engineering, and echoes of France’s dramatic past.
The basilica was conceived as a symbol of hope and national penance following years of conflict, especially the Franco-Prussian War and the turbulent days of the Paris Commune. Built from gleaming white travertine stone, which grows brighter in the rain, its rounded domes recall the grandeur of ancient Byzantine and Romanesque cathedrals, with a touch of neo-Renaissance flair. Notice the three-arched entrance, flanked by bronze statues of Saint Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX, while a striking statue of Christ blesses visitors from above.
What makes the site unique is its challenging foundation. Because Montmartre’s hill was riddled with old quarries, engineers sank deep concrete piers—dozens of them—to anchor the entire structure and stabilize the hill itself. The result not only supports the basilica but reinforces the hill that holds up Paris.
Step inside, and you’ll find a space shaped like a Greek cross and glowing with subdued light. France’s largest mosaic radiates gold from the apse, while stained-glass windows and a majestic pipe organ add atmosphere. Centuries-old traditions thrive here: for nearly one hundred and fifty years, worshippers have gathered for ongoing adoration, making this a living center of faith.
Climb the dome’s winding stairs or take the funicular for a panoramic vista reaching far across Paris. Savoyarde, one of Europe’s largest bells, towers quietly in the campanile. The basilica’s travertine stone comes from the same quarries that supplied the Arc de Triomphe—one more link to France’s monumental history.
A shining domes and mystical interiors of the Sacré-Cœur not only inspire awe but also reveal the resilience and creativity that define the French spirit and the unique soul of Montmartre.
