Musée d'Histoire de la Médecine
Quaint museum in a century-old digs featuring a broad collection of historical medical instruments.
Welcome to the Musée d'Histoire de la Médecine, a unique museum nestled in a historic building in the sixth arrondissement of Paris. Originally built as a library in nineteen hundred five, the building later transformed into an anatomical cabinet. Today, it houses one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections of medical instruments and artifacts in Europe.
The museum’s collection traces its roots back to the reign of Louis the Fifteenth when Professor Lafaye made a donation that set the foundation. Over time, the collection expanded to include surgical tools, anatomical models, wax sculptures, and paintings from the former Faculty of Medicine. One of the standout artifacts is an eighteenth-century mannequin crafted by Felice Fontana, a piece that captures the artistry and scientific curiosity of its time.
Walking through its three rooms, visitors encounter items from many fields such as emergency surgery, gynecology, dentistry, otorhinolaryngology, pharmacy, and physiology. Antique instruments stand alongside modern surgical tools, revealing the evolution of medical practices over the centuries. Exhibits also highlight the stories of historical epidemics, medical discoveries, and the achievements of renowned practitioners.
Managed by Université Paris-Cité, the museum blends academic research with engaging displays, making it a fascinating destination for visitors in their mid-twenties to forties who are eager to explore the rich tapestry of medical history, science, and art in Europe.
