Musée de Cluny - Musée national du Moyen Âge
Turreted Gothic mansion housing vast collection of medieval arts, crafts & tapestries.
Welcome to the Musée de Cluny – Musée national du Moyen Âge, a treasure nestled in Paris’s Latin Quarter. Step back to a time when medieval artisans and scholars shaped Europe. This unique museum resides in a fifteenth-century mansion, once home to the abbots of Cluny, complete with parts of ancient Roman baths that remind visitors of the city’s layered past.
The collection spans from the late Roman period through the Middle Ages and into the dawn of the Renaissance. Visitors come face to face with artifacts such as Roman relics, exquisite medieval sculptures, stained glass windows, metalwork, ivories, and religious objects crafted with timeless skill.
Among its crown jewels is the famous tapestry series La Dame à la licorne. Each panel, rich in mysterious symbolism, represents the five senses and a sixth, more spiritual sense. This series, along with other pieces, originated in the nineteenth century from the collection of Alexandre Du Sommerard, whose passion for history led to the museum's founding.
Recent renovations have modernized visitor experiences without erasing historical character. Today, newer facilities blend gracefully with old stone walls and tranquil medieval gardens, including a feature known as the unicorn’s forest.
The Musée de Cluny invites curious travelers to explore a stunning journey through centuries of art and history in the very heart of Paris.
