Tour Montparnasse
Modern 210m tower with panoramic views from roof terrace and 56th-floor observation deck.
Tour Montparnasse stands as a modern icon in Paris. It is a two hundred and ten meter tall tower built with fifty-nine floors, located at thirty-three Avenue du Maine in the fourteenth district. Constructed from nineteen sixty-nine to nineteen seventy-three on the site of a former train station, its story is one of ambition and innovation.
When it first opened, Parisians debated its modern design. Many felt the tower clashed with the city’s older, historic architecture. The building even inspired a law that banned new tall buildings in central Paris—a rule that stayed in place until two thousand and fifteen.
Engineers faced many challenges. Building above a metro line meant they had to create deep reinforced concrete foundations to ensure stability. In later years, daring urban climbers like Alain Robert and Marcin Banot climbed the tower’s exterior without any safety equipment, adding to its legendary status.
Over time, Tour Montparnasse has worn many hats. It houses corporate and political offices, hosts live broadcasts, and welcomes public events. In the mid-two thousands, when asbestos contamination was discovered, extensive remediation was carried out and completed by two thousand and twelve.
Today, its fifty-sixth floor observation deck and rooftop terrace offer visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the city and beyond. With its restaurant, Ciel de Paris, and retractable antennas framing the view, the tower remains a popular destination that bridges modern engineering with Paris’s rich cultural landscape.
