MAC VAL - Musée d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne
Museum of contemporary French art from the 1950s to the present, with a sculpture garden & cafe.
MAC VAL, also known as the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Val-de-Marne, is situated at Place de la Libération in Vitry-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris. Open since November two thousand five, the museum is dedicated solely to contemporary French art from the fifties until today. Its modern building was designed by architect Jacques Ripault and spans approximately thirteen thousand square meters. Of this space, around four thousand square meters are devoted to galleries, and it is surrounded by a public garden measuring about ten thousand square meters.
The museum’s collection began in nineteen eighty-two through the Départemental Fund for Contemporary Art and now features roughly two thousand five hundred works. Visitors will discover key artistic movements such as kinetic art, Supports/Surfaces, and Nouveau Réalisme, which have forever changed the landscape of French art. Notable artists like Jacques Monory and Claude Lévêque have been prominently showcased.
Every eighteen months, the museum updates its permanent exhibitions, ensuring a fresh and dynamic experience with each visit. In addition to the galleries, guests can explore an auditorium, a cinema dedicated to art and experimental films, art workshops, and a documentation center that highlights art from the fifties to today.
Beyond the art, MAC VAL offers a restaurant called À La Folie, which reflects local culinary trends. MAC VAL is a must-see cultural destination for anyone exploring the Paris region.
