Museum showcasing coins & banknotes, with interactive exhibits exploring economics history.
Welcome to Cité de l'Économie, also known as Citéco. Situated at one Place du Général-Catroux in the seventeenth district of Paris, this museum occupies a grand building originally constructed in eighteen eighty-two for a renowned banker and art collector, Émile Gaillard. The structure, known then as Hôtel Gaillard, boasts neo-Renaissance features that speak of a bygone era with intricate details and an imposing presence.
Acquired by the Banque de France in nineteen seventeen, the building experienced extensive renovations. A spacious Grand Hall, an impressive vault surrounded by deep moats, and even a movable bridge enhance its unique character. Designated as a historical monument in nineteen ninety-nine, this former bank branch has gracefully transformed into a vibrant educational space.
Cité de l'Économie brings economics to life through interactive exhibits that simplify complex ideas. Past temporary exhibitions have explored themes such as the interplay between economics and daily life, portraits of influential figures, and creative cultural interpretations of money. In collaboration with important institutions like the Banque de France, the Ministry of National Education, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and Universcience, the museum offers a dynamic calendar of events, conferences, and programs designed to engage curious visitors.
