Le mur des je t'aime
Wall within a park, bearing the words 'I love you' in multiple languages & a popular meeting place.
Today, we invite you on a journey to one of Paris's most enchanting landmarks: Le Mur des Je T'aime, known in English as The Wall of Love. Situated in Square Jehan Rictus at Place des Abbesses in the Montmartre area, this forty-square-metre mural is a true celebration of love.
Created in the year two thousand by artists Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito, the artwork consists of six hundred and twelve enamel tiles. Each tile, measuring approximately twenty-one by twenty-nine point seven centimetres, bears the phrase "I love you" three hundred and eleven times in two hundred and fifty languages. These include commonly spoken ones, as well as more unusual languages such as Navajo, Inuit, Bambara, and Esperanto, representing a world united by affection.
The design features striking red splashes that symbolise fragments of a broken heart coming together to form a complete whole. This imaginative reinterpretation transforms a traditional barrier, the wall, into an emblem of unity and shared emotion. Over the years, the wall has evolved into a treasured meeting spot for locals and visitors from across the globe, inspiring modern expressions of love and unity. Nestled in the artistic heart of Montmartre, Le Mur des Je T'aime merges history, culture, and art into a timeless tribute to love.
