Square Montholon is a historic urban park nestled in the ninth arrondissement of Paris, near Rue Mayran and Rue de Montholon. Developed in eighteen sixty-three under the guidance of Adolphe Alphand, it is one of twenty-four green spaces created during the Second Empire. Visitors will appreciate its elegant terraced layout, complete with oriental plane trees that have stood for over a century, including one reaching around thirty-two metres, planted in eighteen seventy-two.
During its construction, workers discovered an intact mammoth skeleton. This extraordinary find enriches the square’s legacy, linking ancient history to its vibrant present. The park is enclosed by elaborate wrought iron fences, designed by Gabriel Davioud with grilles crafted by Christophe-François Calla, similar to those found in other iconic Parisian locations.
Art enthusiasts may note that the park once showcased significant sculptures such as Gloria Victis and La Sainte Catherine, a homage to local female workers. A commemorative stele in the square pays tribute to the young Jewish children who were deported during the Second World War. Over the years, Square Montholon has also made its mark in literature and music, blending its illustrious past with contemporary cultural expressions. Today, modern facilities complement its historical allure, inviting visitors to enjoy a serene escape filled with art and history.
