Perched on the slopes of Montmartre, Square Louise Michel is a green sanctuary that attracts visitors from all over the world. Covering several acres, this gently terraced park stretches out beneath the iconic domes of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica – one of Paris’s most famous landmarks – offering a welcoming retreat where gardens, heritage, and art come together.

The origins of the square date back to the late nineteenth century, on land that was once home to a gypsum quarry. Originally called Square Saint-Pierre, the park was later named Square Willette, before being renamed in honour of Louise Michel in the early twenty-first century. She was a teacher, writer, and a key figure of the Paris Commune, remembered for her tireless pursuit of social equality. The park pays tribute to her legacy with paths dedicated to those who endured the turbulent aftermath of the Commune.

Landscape architect Adolphe Alphand and architect Paul Abadie played key roles in designing not only this space, but also many other parks and buildings throughout Paris. Thanks to their vision, the park features wide lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and shaded pathways. As you ascend the broad, tree-lined steps and ramps— more than two hundred in total— you pass through sunlit terraces, each revealing breathtaking views over the city.

At the heart of the square stands the neoclassical fountain by Paul Gasq, adorned with mythical sea creatures sculpted into three arches. Water cascades from the carved basins, collecting in a large pool and bringing a sense of freshness and movement to the upper terrace. Nearby, the Montmartre funicular glides smoothly up the hillside, making the climb accessible to everyone.

Children are often found around the vintage carousel at the foot of the park, with its hand-carved horses spinning in a charming, old-fashioned style. The Allée de l'Île-des-Pins and several venerable trees offer quiet corners along winding paths. Benches, lawns, and peaceful areas make it a favourite spot for picnics or relaxing afternoons.

More than just a way to reach the Sacré-Cœur, Square Louise Michel is a vibrant part of Parisian life, blending culture, memory, and some of the most stunning views in northern Paris.
