Musée de Cluny - Musée national du Moyen Âge
Turreted Gothic mansion housing vast collection of medieval arts, crafts & tapestries.
Welcome to the Musée de Cluny – the National Museum of the Middle Ages, a gem tucked away in Paris's Latin Quarter. Step into an era when medieval craftsmen and scholars influenced Europe. This distinctive museum is housed in a mansion from the fifteenth century, once the residence of the abbots of Cluny, and includes parts of ancient Roman baths that echo the city’s rich historical layers.
The collection covers the period from the late Roman era through the Middle Ages and into the early Renaissance. Visitors will encounter items such as Roman artefacts, stunning medieval sculptures, stained glass windows, metalwork, ivory carvings, and religious objects fashioned with enduring skill.
Among its most prized possessions is the renowned tapestry series "The Lady and the Unicorn." Each panel, full of enigmatic symbolism, depicts the five senses and a sixth, more spiritual sense. This series, along with other items, originally belonged to the collection of Alexandre Du Sommerard in the nineteenth century, whose love for history inspired the establishment of the museum.
Recent updates have enhanced visitor experiences while maintaining its historical integrity. Today, modern amenities harmoniously coexist with the ancient stone walls and peaceful medieval gardens, including a feature known as the unicorn’s forest.
The Musée de Cluny invites inquisitive visitors to embark on a remarkable journey through centuries of art and history in the very heart of Paris.
