MAC VAL - Musée d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne
Museum of contemporary French art from the 1950s to the present, with a sculpture garden & cafe.
MAC VAL, officially known as the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Val-de-Marne, is located at Place de la Libération in Vitry-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris. Since opening its doors in November two thousand and five, the museum has been dedicated exclusively to French contemporary art from the nineteen-fifties to the present day. The striking modern building, designed by architect Jacques Ripault, covers approximately thirteen thousand square metres. Of this space, about four thousand square metres are allocated to galleries, with the museum set within a public garden of around ten thousand square metres.
The museum's collection began in nineteen eighty-two with the Départemental Fund for Contemporary Art and now comprises roughly two thousand five hundred works. Visitors can explore major artistic movements such as kinetic art, Supports/Surfaces, and Nouveau Réalisme, which have indelibly shaped the French art scene. Renowned artists like Jacques Monory and Claude Lévêque feature prominently in its exhibits.
Every eighteen months, the museum refreshes its permanent exhibitions, ensuring each visit offers a vibrant and dynamic experience. Visitors also have access to an auditorium, a cinema dedicated to art and experimental films, art workshops, and a documentation centre showcasing art from the nineteen-fifties through to today.
Alongside its artistic offerings, MAC VAL hosts a restaurant called À La Folie, which reflects the latest local culinary trends. MAC VAL is an essential destination for anyone exploring the cultural landscape of the Paris region.
