Guided tours of former wine cellars displaying objects from fairgrounds, theaters & music halls.
Les Pavillons de Bercy – Musée des Arts Forains offers an enchanting journey through the vibrant history of amusement and fairground arts in Paris. Situated in former wine warehouses in the twelfth arrondissement at fifty-three Avenue des Terroirs de France, these elegant stone pavilions were originally designed by Louis-Ernest Lheureux. They once stored wine before being transformed into a magical cultural venue. The restoration meticulously preserves the historical essence of the buildings while breathing new life into vintage rides and attractions.
The museum originated from the private collection of Jean Paul Favand and opened its doors in nineteen ninety-six. It showcases a unique assortment of fairground artefacts and interactive attractions spanning from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, including a velocipede ride from eighteen ninety-seven and a carousel with gondolas. The exhibition space is divided into themed areas like the Theatre of Marvels, which is filled with audiovisual displays recreating early world fairs; the Venetian Lounges, featuring automata shows inspired by Italian opera; and the Fairground Art Museum, celebrating classic funfairs. Every element vividly brings history to life, from restored rides and games like the Coffee Boys Race to displays reminiscent of Captain Nemo’s adventures. The museum also holds a place in contemporary culture, having been a film location for productions like Midnight in Paris and Emily in Paris. Guided tours and seasonal events allow every visitor to experience a captivating blend of historic charm and interactive enjoyment.
