Musée national Eugène-Delacroix
Sketches & paintings by enigmatic artist Delacroix, displayed in his house, studio & small museum.
The Musée national Eugène-Delacroix invites visitors to explore its historic setting in the heart of Paris. Located at six rue de Furstenberg in the lively sixth arrondissement, the area is renowned for its classic Parisian charm and convenient access via metro or bus.
The museum safeguards the last apartment and studio of the renowned Romantic painter, Eugène Delacroix. Delacroix resided here from December eighteen fifty-seven until his passing in August eighteen sixty-three. Each room offers a glimpse into his artistic life and daily routines. Visitors can observe his treasured easel, well-used palettes, and even a simple glass for everyday use.
The museum was established by the Society of the Friends of Eugène Delacroix in the late nineteen twenties and was spared from demolition with the assistance of esteemed artists such as Maurice Denis and Henri Matisse. In the early nineteen seventies, it gained national status and has since fostered a strong connection with the Louvre.
The collection includes paintings, drawings, lithographs, engravings, personal items, manuscripts, letters, and photographs. Prominent works such as La Madeleine dans le désert, L’Éducation de la Vierge, and Roméo et Juliette au tombeau des Capulet provide insights into his profound impact on Romantic art in France.
