The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain began its journey in nineteen eighty-four, initially established by the Cartier brand as a hub for contemporary art. Since then, it has evolved into a space where renowned international artists and promising newcomers come together. In nineteen ninety-four, the museum relocated to its current home at two hundred and sixty-one Boulevard Raspail in Paris' fourteenth arrondissement, residing in a bright and spacious building crafted by the esteemed architect Jean Nouvel. The extensive use of glass in the architecture fosters a sense of openness and clarity, reflecting the museum’s forward-thinking ethos.

The building sits on the site that used to be the American Center for Students and Artists, infusing its current role with a historical backdrop of creativity. Its collection, boasting over one thousand five hundred pieces by more than three hundred and fifty artists, includes grand installations and innovative works that captivate the imagination.

Outside, there is a contemporary woodland garden created by landscape designer Lothar Baumgarten, offering a tranquil escape in contrast to the lively exhibitions within. The museum's temporary exhibitions are thoughtfully selected to present a diverse array of ideas and methods, finding harmony between avant-garde art and the rich cultural heritage that influences the local community.
