Audio GuideBourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection
Display of contemporary art from François Pinault's collection in a space within the Stock Exchange.
Welcome to the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection. This exceptional establishment offers a fascinating exploration of Parisian history intertwined with contemporary art. Originally constructed as a grain exchange in the mid-eighteenth century, the building was once a bustling centre for trading wheat and other goods, on a site that had previously been home to a grand residence associated with Catherine de' Medici.
The building is circular in design with a central courtyard, and its dome has famously been likened by Victor Hugo to a jockey's cap. In the nineteenth century, significant renovations were undertaken that preserved its historical layout while introducing new decorative and structural elements, which continue to reflect its illustrious past.
Since 2021, the structure has been repurposed as an exhibition space for the Pinault Collection. Renowned architect Tadao Ando creatively re-envisioned the space with a modern touch. Visitors now encounter a thirty-foot-tall concrete cylinder, a vast gallery, and a subterranean auditorium, making it one of the largest private art museums in Paris.
The Bourse de Commerce now stands as a distinctive cultural destination where history and contemporary art merge seamlessly. Enjoy a visit that honours the legacy of the past while celebrating the innovation of the present.
