The Aquarium de Paris offers a unique experience beneath Chaillot Hill in the sixteenth arrondissement of Paris. Originally established in eighteen sixty-seven as the world’s first aquarium, it closed its doors in nineteen eighty-five due to deterioration and a decline in visitors. However, after extensive refurbishment, it reopened in two thousand and six as a vibrant cultural centre.

This aquarium is situated in an area that historically housed Napoleon’s cavalry in old quarries and was later used for mushroom farming. Today, it covers roughly three thousand five hundred square metres below ground. Visitors can enjoy a variety of exhibits, including a Polynesian tank with seven hundred and fifty corals, a large tank hosting thirty-eight sharks from seven different species across three million litres of water, and an Aquastudio with a one hundred and sixty thousand litre tank, where magical mermaid shows are held.

The aquarium also brings cultural creativity to life with themed exhibitions and events. Previous activities have included interactive workshops, treasure hunts, and art installations like an aquatic bestiary. In two thousand and nineteen, the aquarium introduced a medusarium, showcasing two thousand five hundred jellyfish in twenty-four tanks. Characters from popular media, such as Ladybug from Miraculous, add a modern narrative twist to the historical backdrop.
